The US
Sabot Association is an organization
established to promote and maintain national US Sabot Class
racing under uniform rules and regulations. Its purpose is
to promote and maintain a one-design class of US Sabots in
order that racing shall determine the skill of a skipper.
It is an outgrowth of the historical groups that supported
Sydney and Windward Sabots that were used in the Southern
California area. Catalina Yachts is now the exclusive manufacturer
of the US Sabot. You need to be a member of the Association
in order to race in US Sabot sanctioned High Point race events
and the US Sabot National Championship held once a year.
Competition: The
US Sabot Association is all about friendly competition, Corinthian
spirit and kids taking aim at a goal. The spirited competitions
give the kids a chance to test their knowledge, sailing technique
and mental skills, putting everything together on the water
with their peers. By separating into A, B and C fleets, kids
compete at their skill level, improve quickly and move up
when they are ready. Races are exciting, fun and a great way
for the kids to spend time on the water and for parents to
enthusiastically provide support to their children. Many US
Sabot Association racers have gone on to great sailing success
in high school, college and beyond.
Developing Sailing Skills:
While racing is a big part of the Association, the vast percentage
of time is spent in practice. Most members are part of a youth
organization that is either independent or associated with a
local yacht club. Expert instructors are usually available to
provide introductory to advanced sailing instruction at a nominal
charge as part of the year-round youth program or as part of
a summer sailing program. The US Sabot provides an excellent
learning vehicle for youth sailors and the vast majority move
up to more advanced boats like the CFJ, Laser or 470 with the
skill set that only comes from getting a solid background in
the basics from a small, simple boat.
Parental
Involvement: The US Sabot Association
depends on parents to run the Association and to be involved
with the kids at practices and the races. It is a great l opportunity
to spend quality time with your kids, really get to know and
inspire them and be there as they mature as sailors, socially
and as confident individuals.
